Absorption
The process by which radiation imparts some or all of its energy to any
material through which it passes.

Acceptable Risk
Risk that has been reduced to a level that can it be tolerated by the organization having regard to its legal obligations and its own Occupational Health & Safety policy.

Access Platform
A fully boarded out bay, provides step off points for ladder access.

Accident
An event or chain of events that HAS caused a fatality, an injury, illness and/or damage (loss) to people, property (assets), the environment or company reputation.

Acclimatized
Acclimatization is a set of physiological adaptations. Full-heat acclimatization requires up to 3 weeks of continued physical activity under heat stress conditions similar to those anticipated for the work.

As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP)
The ALARP principle is used in proposing control measures to reduce the level of risk associated with a given hazard and states that the residual risk shall be as low as reasonably practicable. This term is associated with SFAIRP (safety so far as is reasonably practicable) in UK Health and Safety law.


Anaemia
Deficiency of blood as a whole, or deficiency in the number of the red cells or of the haemoglobin.

Analysis
A form of measurement, used to obtain quantitative information about the
intensive properties (such as concentration of a specific pollutant) of a sample.

Angle of Repose
The angle which a loose heap of soil makes with the horizontal ground is called the angle of repose

Authorized Gas Tester:
A person who is trained and certified to perform gas tests.

Activity
It is a general term referring to industrial operations on a site.

Acute Health Effects
Acute health effects are those which occur suddenly & in a short time (seconds to hours) following exposure to a health hazard. An acute exposure runs a comparatively short course.

Audit
It is a systematic, independent and documented process for obtaining “audit evidence” and evaluating it objectively to determine the extent to which “audit criteria” are fulfilled

Auditor
Person with the competence to conduct an audit

Auditee
A person or an organization which is being audited
